We’re convinced that quality education is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. We also believe that relationships and connectivity are crucial to helping people rise. Tutoring is an opportunity to offer students increased access to both.

READING TUTORing

The North Star Reading Partners initiative is a CMS district-wide effort to ensure that every child is able to read on grade level or higher by the end of third grade. CMS is asking the community at large to join our city’s educators in nurturing literacy by giving “one hour to one child once a week.”

As a reading tutor you would spend time with the same child each week, building a friendship and learning as you go. Schools have a user-friendly reading curriculum for tutors use – you don’t need any education experience to jump in! Time slots are available M-F, 7:30AM-4PM.

We offer reading tutoring options at Walter G. Byers and Shamrock Gardens Elementary.

MAth TUTORing

Heart Math Tutoring is a math intervention program that recruits, trains, and supports volunteers as tutors in high-poverty elementary schools in Charlotte, NC. Heart’s mission is to ensure that all elementary students develop the strong foundation in math and enthusiasm for academics needed for long-term success, by helping schools use volunteers as tutors.

As a math tutor you would spend time with the same child each week, building a friendship and learning as you go. Heart trains tutors to use a fun, game-based curriculum – you don’t need any education experience to jump in! Time slots are available M-F, 7:30AM-4PM.

We offer math tutoring options at Shamrock Gardens Elementary and Billingsville Elementary.

Even though it sounds overstated, I would honestly say tutoring Andrew has been one of the most impactful relationships of my life and without a doubt makes me a better person. When I think about the way it all came about and how unlikely I would meet such an amazing family this way, it makes me believe in God’s love more. It makes me believe in people more. It makes me more optimistic instead of anxious about a future we have very little control over. But my favorite part by far is the look of sheer excitement and joy when I walk in a room to spend time with him, reminding me that he needs this just as much as I do.
