Every other Friday we take a moment to introduce you to someone in our community who serves in one or more of Watershed's many volunteer areas: GreenHouse/Shed Students, Sunday Teams, Catapult, Bloc Leading, etc. The featured volunteer will then select someone he/she would like to see highlighted next.
This week, meet Cheryl!
I have volunteered and led in Greenhouse (mostly in Seedlings). I've also tutored at both Byers and Shamrock Gardens for several years.
Why did you choose to volunteer in your area(s)?
In both areas it is in part because I really enjoy kids! Their wonder, excitement, and vantage is a wonderful juxtaposition to my work-a-day world in banking.
I chose to turor to help open up the world of reading. A couple years in, though, I ended up with a scholar who had a greater need in math. That was then my focus for a couple years. As a math major and an analyst it has been fun to help kids see the "puzzle" in equations and to wrap thier heads around it all.Desire to be a positive impact, to be in relationship with people.
What has been one of your favorite moments as a volunteer?
Last year, as we entered the Spring semester, my scholar had something click into place around 2nd grade math. She quickly went from dreading it all to wanting to show off and work as many problems as she could. Fantastic!
If you could use only one word to describe our Watershed community, what would it be?
Describe your perfect day in Charlotte:
Coffee and a morning chat with a friend, some time outdoors at Freedom park, a creative pursuit for a couple hours, and then a fire pit with friends.
NEXT I WOULD LIKE WATERSHED T0 NOMINATE JEREMY EDWARDS because of his natural ability to connect with people.
