Catapult is a strategic partnership between Watershed and the Walter G. Byers School, which offers the Watershed community the opportunity to support Byers’ students, staff, and families. Byers directly impacts the neighborhoods surrounding our Sunday Gather venue, as well as neighborhoods that are impacted by homelessness. Although some of Charlotte’s greatest resources are directed to this area, Watershed seeks to build relational equity here. Since Catapult launched in 2009, we have seen volunteers provide this relational equity that we all so deeply need and desire.

Since our launch, we have begun an in-school reading and math tutoring initiative. We also implemented Byers’ first Girls on the Run program, led by Watershed volunteers, and for the past few years we have provided volunteer leaders to run Right Moves for Youth. We recently also began providing a “Teacher Pal” for every interested teacher at Byers. These volunteers shower teachers with notes and small gifts throughout the year, to show Watershed’s appreciation for the way they sacrificially love on the students and families of the school.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

One of the biggest needs at Byers School each year is for tutors to help the students excel. Tutors spend about 45 minutes once a week at Byers, helping with school work and encouraging the students. We use this as a way to build relationships with students, with the hope that tutors become more like trusted mentors and friends, to whom the students can turn to for advice and guidance in all areas of life.

Dates: All school year

Days & times: 45-minute time slots are available Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 6:00 PM

Staff Appreciation
A large part of Catapult is investing in the staff at Byers so that they can, in turn, pour into the students. During each school year, we have periodic opportunities to show appreciation to the staff (bringing snacks for the teacher work room, providing food/drinks for staff lunches, etc.). Another way to invest in the staff at Byers is to become a Teacher Pal. Teacher Pals take time to recognize and support teachers by providing them with encouraging notes and small gifts of gratitude 3+ times throughout the year.

Dates: All school year

Days & times: Staff Appreciation events happen periodically throughout the year, and will be announced as they come up. Teacher Pals can pick days and times throughout the year that fit with their schedules to drop notes and small gifts off at the school.
