Watershed seeks to uncover, confront, and transform broken systems of education in order to bring healing and wholeness to people.
Teachers are vital to a quality education, so Watershed believes in supporting teachers both in the US and abroad. In Guatemala, we do this by helping to fund teachers’ wages during the school year. In addition to supporting education, we partner with an on-the-ground organization which comes alongside Guatemalans to empower them toward more self-sustainable and whole lives. In Malawi, primary education is free, but secondary education (i.e., high school) is not, and is often unaffordable for children whose parents are sick or have died. There is a major shortage of working professionals, especially in the medical field. The government of Malawi provides Anti-Retrovirals (ARV's) for free, but there are not enough nurses or doctors to administer these life-saving drugs. Education is the answer to this shortage. Each year, Watershed commits to putting 25 Malawi students through secondary school. For more information on Equitas, our partner organization, please click here.
India: Church Planting and Orphan Sponsorship
Watershed’s founders, the O'Neils and Hoferts, are longtime friends with a young pastor in India named Thangkholal Haokip. Thangkholal grew up in an orphanage, and attended the seminary in Northern India where Matt and Scott taught back in the 90’s. Thangkholal and his wife have planted a church in Guwahati, and also started an orphanage, which serves many of the city’s homeless children. Watershed is a proud sponsor of Thangkholal’s justice-driven work in India!
Watershed is privileged to partner with DeepStream, an organization dedicated to bringing justice to the Guatemalan village of Buena Vista. More specifically, Watershed is involved with DeepStream’s education initiative called EducateBV. Once a year, Watershed takes a team of 10 people down to Guatemala for a week-long discovery trip. Discovery trip participants get to know our partners there, are immersed in local culture, and interact with the people of Buena Vista, all in an effort to build genuine relationships and strengthen our partnership with EducateBV.
